6 Best Desktop Computers for Creatives and Art Students [2026]
Artists and creatives tend to need bigger, badder, stronger machines than most people do. Creative software applications hog RAM, generate large files, and take a lot of processing power and GPU power. In this post, I’m going to give you my picks for the best desktop computers for creatives and art students based on my 20+ years as a professional artist and 16 years as a professor of art and design.
Laptop or Desktop—Which is better? This really depends on you—who you are, the type of work you do, and where you like to do it. If you like to work on the go and from anywhere, then, obviously, a laptop is going to be a better choice for you. But if you like to work from home and have a great studio space to get your groove on, you’ll likely be very happy with a desktop computer. These days, you can get very powerful machines in either format, but desktops are always going to have a leg up when it comes to power and speed. Bigger footprints mean more space for high-performance hardware.

PC or Mac—Which should you get? That depends? Are you doing 3D animation? If so, I definitely recommend a PC. Most 3D software is optimized for NVIDIA graphics cards, and you just can’t get those in a Mac. As much as Apple likes to claim its machines are ready for 3D, my experience has been that PCs are a ton faster and more reliable for this type of work. Are you a 2D or Motion/Video/Musical Artist? I’d recommend a Mac. In my opinion, they are so much more enjoyable to work on. OF course, they are also more expensive too. I’ll provide a list of great recommendations for each to help you make a perfect choice for your needs.
Note: I’m only going to talk about off-the-shelf options here. If you are into building your own PC, take a look at this post:
My main piece of advice for purchasing any computer is to always get the biggest, fastest machine with the latest technology and the most storage and RAM you can afford.
It will last you longer. It will be faster. You’ll be happier when you use it!

What about a Display Screen?
With a laptop, part of the cost includes the built-in screen. This isn’t the case with most desktop computers. With the exception of Apple’s iMac computers, most computers will require an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I’ll include my top monitor recommendations with the computer descriptions in each section.

What’s different about the best desktops for artists vs other types?
The creative software artists use today is amazingly powerful, and your computer needs to be ready for the job. Not enough storage? You’ll run out of room for your projects in no time. A slow processor? You’ll be stuck waiting while your ideas move faster than your machine. For simple tasks like writing in Microsoft Word or browsing the web, an inexpensive computer is perfectly fine. But if you’re an artist, having a solid, reliable computer makes all the difference in bringing your work to life.
How I made decisions for the best desktop computers for creatives recommendations.
I’ve been making digital art from 2D to 3D, still images to moving images, and even working with medical image data like CT and MRI scans for 20+ years. I’ve been teaching art and design students for 16 years. During that time, I’ve helped countless art students make choices about which computer would be best for them. I’m using the same process here for you.
Doing research about what is currently out there, I considered a few things:
- Cost: What is the most I could get for the least price?
- Power: What are the fastest processors and graphics cards available and what are the various software requirements for optimal performance?
- Minimum needs: What is the least I could get by with and still meet the minimum software needs?
- Quality: I only looked at machines that I know are good quality and have good reputations. Apple and Dell (makers of Alienware) have longstanding reputations, particularly in education settings, as tried and true companies. LG makes the best monitors out there, in my opinion, well, maybe with the exception of Apple.
- Design: I only recommend machines that I think are designed well and that I would be happy using myself.
Wrap Up
When you buy a new computer, it is a big deal. They’re expensive and it’s a financial commitment. But, they do so much for us! As a digital artist and educator, I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have the best equipment I could possibly afford to work on. A great machine will save you time and headaches, let you do the work you want to do, and make you feel happy doing it.
